The Tiger Lillies: Punch & Judy, Pod Deco

"Murder is fun," intones Martyn Jacques, falsetto voice and

accordion both aquiver, at the start of The Tiger Lillies'

more-nuts-than-KP operetta based on the seaside puppet legend. He's not

kidding. A hangman is hoist by his own petard. Judy meets her

inevitable end by frying pan, and Jacques, as Punch, manages to wring

humour, pathos and something approaching sympathy.

There are many moments of dark hilarity and Jacques's fellow Lillies

perform sterling work as the voices Punch hears in his head and sundry

other characters. I couldn't help feeling, however, that the Lillies

can evoke stronger imagery with just their songs, instruments and

Jacques's querulous voice. It's still worth checking out, though.
